The rolling process is a major metal forming manufacturing process. During the rolling process, the metal workpiece is compressed between a set of rolls where it reduces its cross section area and increases its length. Rolling is ideal for large length same cross-section workpieces. When it comes to rolling, there are several different types. Let’s take a look at the types of rolling, including rolled rings.
Ring Rolling
The ring rolling process consists of two rollers that rotate in the same direction to each other. The ring rotates due to the rotation of the roller and the rollers start to move closer to each other. An extra pair of edge rollers are used to maintain the height while the diameter changes. Ring rolling is used to make items such as bearing and turbines.
Skew Rolling
Skew rolling is done to make the ball of ball bearings. During this process, a round bar or wire is fed directly into specially designed rollers. These rollers continuously form spherical balls by rolling action. In addition to the ball of ball bearings, skew rolling is also used to make other types of small size spherical balls.
Transverse Rolling
Transverse rolling takes place when both rollers rotate in the same direction and the bar is fed transversely. This process is used to make items such as tapper shafts and leaf springs.
