Cold and hot forming of Inconel alloy 600 is possible with conventional techniques. Because the ductility declines between 1200- and 1600-degrees Fahrenheit, hot work should only be done between 1600- and 2250-degrees Fahrenheit. Moreover, SMA, TIG, and MIG are all acceptable methods for welding alloy 600.
Inconel 600 Basics
Description
The standard engineering material Inconel alloy 600 is used in applications that call for resistance to corrosion and heat. Additionally, the alloy exhibits excellent mechanical qualities and offers the desired blend of high strength and easy workability.
Characteristics
- Corrosion Resistance
Inconel 600 has a far higher oxidation resistance than pure nickel because of its high chromium concentration. It has superior corrosion resistance in other conditions due to its high nickel content.High degrees of resistance to stress, seawater, exhaust fumes, and the majority of organic acids and compounds are exhibited by this alloy.
- Good Impact Strength
At room temperature, this type of alloy has an excellent impact strength and maintains nearly all of that strength at low temperatures. There is no tough-to-brittle transition as temperature drops when you use Inconel 600.
Applications
The usual applications of Inconel 600 include:
- Gas turbine components
- Vegetable and fatty acid vessels
- Titanium dioxide
- Soap manufacture
- Phenol condensers
- MgCl2 evaporates
- Gasoline stabilizer production
- Furnace trays, mufflers, hangers
- Ethylene dichloride crackers
- Carburizing atmospheres
- Barge and tank truck liners
Industries that Use Inconel Applications
- Nuclear Engineering
- Food processing
- Pulp and paper industry
- Heat treating industry
- Aerospace
- Chemical industry
Working with Inconel 600
Due to work hardening, Inconel 600 should be machined in the annealed condition as it can be challenging. With high-duty tooling, this material can be machined similarly to stainless steel 304 and cold formed using conventional fabrication methods. It can be welded using standard welding, brazing, and soldering techniques without needing post-weld annealing.
