Titanium Facts
- The element titanium is named after the Titans in mythology. In Greek mythology, the Titans were the gods of Earth.
- Titanium was discovered in 1791 by William Gregor. Gregor was a pastor in a village in South Cornwall of the United Kingdom called Manaccan. He originally gave it a different name however, calling it manaccanite.
- The name titanium was given to the element by German chemist Martin Heinrich Klaproth in 1795 after he independently discovered it. Gregor was credited with the initial discovery, but Heinrich was credited with the name.
- Titanium is an abundant element. It is found naturally in humans, plants, seawater, on the Moon, in meteors, and in the Sun and other stars.
- Titanium has an incredibly high strength to weight ratio. It is 60 times denser than aluminum but is twice as strong. It has the comparable strength of steel but is 45% lighter.
- Titanium also has a high corrosion resistance. It is estimated that it would take 4,000 years in seawater to corrode to the thickness of a piece of paper.
