Ferralloy, Inc. is a leader in forgings, castings, heat-resistant fabrications, and metals and alloys, offering diverse engineered products to clients around the world since 1984. Dedicated to customer satisfaction, our team delivers high-quality solutions for the metalworking and thermal processing industries.
Among the many manufacturing-quality superalloys and refractory metals we offer, Hastelloy® C-276 provides exceptional resistance to corrosive substances as well as high temperatures. This versatile alloy also has good formability and weldability, meaning that it’s generally easy to work with and fabricate into numerous products. Here, we will explore the various properties and benefits of Hastelloy® C-276 to help you determine if it is the right material for your specific application.
Hastelloy® C-276 Overview
Hastelloy® C-276’s composition is responsible for its impressive corrosion and thermal resistance capabilities. The alloy consists of nickel and lesser amounts of molybdenum, chromium, iron, tungsten, and cobalt. The average chemical composition of Hastelloy® C-276 is as follows:
- Nickel: 56%
- Molybdenum: 16%
- Chromium: 15%
- Iron: 5.5%
- Tungsten: 4%
- Cobalt: 2.5%
Hastelloy® C-276’s chemical properties make it ideal for applications that will expose its products to brine, seawater, chlorine, inorganic and organic chloride-contaminated media, hot contaminated mineral acids, and formic acids, as well as acetic, acetic acids, and acetic anhydride. It also stands up exceptionally well to cupric and ferric chloride solutions, along with those of other oxidizing salts. In particular, the alloy is unique for its ability to resist chlorine dioxide solutions, wet chloride gas, and hypochlorite.
Hastelloy® C-276 Alloy Forms

Applications
Various applications depend on Hastelloy® C-276’s material properties. In its as-welded condition, Hastelloy® C-276 does not tend to experience grain boundary precipitation due to its minimal carbon content, making it a good choice for applications in chemical processing. Its resistance to corrosion makes it an ideal material for components in bleach plants, sulfuric acid environments, organic chloride processing operations, and equipment that may be exposed to sour gas.
In industries such as chemical processing, waste treatment, pharmaceutical manufacturing, food and beverage processing, and paper and pulp production, Hastelloy® C-276 is well-suited to the following applications:
- Agitators and mixers
- Dampers
- Digesters
- Evaporators
- Filters
- Flue gas desulfurization system parts
- Heat exchangers
- Pressure vessels
- Process equipment
- Pumps and valves
- Reactors
- Scrubbers
- Solvent recovery plant components
- Sour gas environment components
- Transfer piping
- Venturis
