Forged Metal Round Bars

About Forged Round Metal Bars

A forged metal bar is a cylindrical shape that is produced using one of several ‘forging’ processes. Forged bars are used in a wide variety of equipment and industrial applications. The forging process results in stronger metal with superior mechanical properties, designed for heavy loads, torque, and the safe transmission of mechanical energy. Forged metal round bars can be used in many industries, such as oil and gas, chemical processing, and power generation.

At Ferralloy, we specialize in high-quality castings, forgings, and machined components. We can provide customers with steel round bar stock for building, manufacturing, and production. Learn more about our products and forging processes.

Manufacturing Forged Metal Round Bars

Standard cutting and machining processes cut through the bar’s internal grain structure, disrupting it and potentially leaving weak points along the grain boundaries. Forging uses a combination of heat and compression to bend the grain structure, forcing it into the right form while protecting the mechanical properties.

Open-Die Forging

Open-die forging uses a top die attached to a ram and a bottom die attached to a bolster, anvil, or hammer to create the desired shape. This requires heating the metal to temperatures ranging from 500 °F to 2,400 °F. The metal is never completely confined or restrained in the dies during the shaping process.

Closed-Die Forging

Closed-die processes operate similarly to open-die workflows. The key difference is that the dies partially or fully enclose the metal during shaping to ensure the metal product exactly matches the intended shape. Our engineers can use this process for more intricate forms, as well as for high-volume production.

Roll Forging

We process rounded or flat stock by compressing it with semi-cylindrical or fully cylindrical rolls, which press the metal down to make it thinner and longer. The heated bar continues to elongate and become thinner, and the rolls and grooves of the press shape the metal into its final rounded form.

Benefits of Quality Forged Metal Round Bars

Forged metal round bars from Ferralloy offer improved performance compared to other alternatives. Consider these benefits:

  • Superior Strength. Our forged bars are known for their impressive strength and dependability. The forging process creates an aligned grain flow, increasing the material’s resistance to wear, weight, and impact.
  • Consistent Quality. Forging eliminates shrinkage, cracks, or cavities that you may see with other production methods. Our customers can depend on us for consistently strong and reliable metal round bars for their given application.
  • Customizability. Our forging processes allow us to meet a range of application-specific requirements. Our engineering team can help you navigate different options for steel alloys, dimensional requirements, shapes, and other design considerations.

Common Metal Round Bar Applications

At Ferralloy, we work with multiple major industries to forge high-quality steel round bars for industrial use. We serve the following markets:

Oil & Gas

Our forged metal bars can withstand the heavy forces and extreme environments of the oil and gas industry. They are commonly used to manufacture fittings, drill bits, valves, downhole tools, and equipment for pipelines and refineries. Specialized stainless steel alloys are also available for subsea and offshore drilling applications.

Chemical Processing

Our stainless steel round bars are resistant and long-lasting, making them ideal for producing chemicals, consumable goods, and petrochemical goods that need protection from potential contamination.

Power Generation

Our forged metal components are capable of withstanding the high temperatures and forces of energy production applications. We carry stainless steel round bars for turbines, solar panel components, and more.

Food and Beverage

Our metal round bars can be used to make piping components and specialty tank components. Using “sanitary grade” stainless steel parts minimizes the risk of degradation and contamination, protecting food, ingredients, and chemicals used for food and beverage production.

Medical

Forged stainless and titanium components from Ferralloy are strong, corrosion resistant, and easy to sterilize without damaging the material. These characteristics make them ideal for medical devices, implants, and tools.
