The process is also known as impression die forging and can be used to create a lot of useful products that are all around you on a daily basis. Closed die forging is a tried and true method of creating the metal components that you use every day.

The Process

This process begins when two dies are brought together. The workpiece undergoes the deformation process until the enlarged sides touch the side walls of the die. A small amount of material should then begin to flow outside of the workpiece. This will increase the resistance to deformation and help further spread things out inside the workpiece. After that happens, the upsetting occurs. The upset material can flow freely where it needs to in order to finish creating the product in question.

Closed Die Forging Applications

One of the biggest reasons closed die forging has stuck around as a production method is because of how versatile its applications are. Products made by closed die forging can be made from many different materials and can be seen across hundreds of different industries. Materials commonly used are:

  • Carbon
  • Stainless Steel
  • Alloy Steels
  • Inconel
  • Rene
  • Super Alloys
  • Carbon Steels
  • Titanium
  • Nickel
  • Cobalt
  • And More

Because you can make these products from virtually any material, you will see them in virtually every industry. Some of the more common industries that use these parts are aircraft, aerospace, oil and gas, coal mining, steel production, and more.
