Cold forgings are a metal shaping and forging method that involves inserting bar stock into a die and squeezing it into the next closed die. To form metal into a desired shape or structure, the procedure is done at room temperature or below the metal’s melting point. The cold forging method is particularly well adapted to high production rates, making it perfect for high-volume applications like automotive. The pressure applied by the crushers is higher in the lack of heating the billets than in conventional forging techniques, requiring the employment of powerful forces.

The Cold Forging Process

Cutting the Material

A proper heat treatment carried out by the steelmaker softens the bars before delivery. Cold forging isn’t possible with all steel grades. Thus, the carbon content must be less than 0.5 percent, and the work hardening rate must be acceptable.

Lubricant Is Applied

Lubricating the workpiece beforehand will protect it from sticking to the die and lower the temperature during the molding process, reaching 250° to 450°.

Forging Technique

The material is inserted in a series of dies, one after the other until the required form is achieved. Mechanical or hydraulic presses, both horizontal and vertical, are used to apply the pushing force.

Transport

Since cold-forged pieces won’t need additional heat treatment, they are either machined in the warehouse or delivered directly to the clients.
